Counselling & Psychotherapy

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is primarily a talk-based therapy and is intended to improve mental health and well-being. Psychotherapy can help individuals cope with stressful life events, the impact of trauma, medical illness or loss, such as the death of a loved one; and specific mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety. Psychotherapy may be used in combination with medication or other therapies.

Psychotherapy vs. Counselling

The terms psychotherapy and counselling are often used interchangeably, however, there are a few differences between the two.

Counselling may be a less in-depth process and does not generally involve psychosocial intervention, where as psychotherapy usually involves psychosocial intervention. The therapeutic process used will depend on your needs and goals.

Some examples of psychosocial interventions are:

  • Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behaviour therapy
  • Trauma focused therapy
  • Family systems therapy
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)

What is a Nurse Psychotherapist?

A nurse psychotherapist is a nurse, registered in their province, who has the skills, knowledge and experience to provide counselling and/or psychotherapy safely.

The nurse psychotherapist offers a therapeutic alliance and holds space for clients to explore intense emotions. The nurse psychotherapist analyzes and assess behaviour patterns that may cause mental or emotional challenges. The nurse initiates therapies that aim to improve mental health concerns.
