In Western culture, death is a topic that is often avoided. There tends to be a heavy fear that surrounds death and dying in our society.
Avoidance in death has the potential to lead to lost opportunities to explore the meaning of a life. There may be a lack of open and honest communication between the dying person and loved ones. Emotions may go unexpressed and wishes my go unfulfilled.
A new approach to dying is beginning to emerge, one that encourages the dying person and their loved ones to engage in open and honest communication, as well as openly exploring death and dying in a meaningful way. The goal of this approach is to allow the dying person and their loved ones have more control over how the dying process unfolds.
A doula functions as support for both the dying person and their loved ones. A doula may be involved long before the death to help plan and process emotions. A doula may continue to offer support for some time following the death to guide loved ones through early grief. The specific tasks a doula may take on will depend on the dying person's needs and wishes and their loved one's wishes.
The importance of a doula is to bring focus to details that others may miss. End of life is a time of profound emotion and it may be easy for details to be overlooked by loved ones as a result. Health care providers may become preoccupied with the physical needs of the dying person and may overlook spiritual needs. A doula can bring deeper meaning and comfort to the dying person and those around them.
